FALL FASHION - PLAID 2013

I have been seeing plaid everywhere recently! Plaid shirts, obviously, but now there are plaid dresses, skirts, trousers, leggings and jackets. Plaid everything! Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a bit of plaid in one's life. Perhaps in the lining of a wax lined jacket. However, plaid is difficult. What is difficult about wearing these tartan patterns is finding the right balance. On one hand you run the risk of falling into the dreaded farmer category with the plaid rolled up jackets or shirts. Now, that is not a good path to tread. However, on the other hand you could be trapped in with the reminder of the KILT. You know, those wool tartan skirts which men have traditionally worn in the Scottish Highlands (known for not wearing underwear underneath. I can hardly imagine the treacherous itch they must face!).

So, while not trying to steer you off the plaid band wagon completely, I must just warn you to find the right medium.

Some examples of when it can be worn well, and not so well...

Now where do I begin, Kristen? Although I want to stay on the plaid topic, it is difficult for me to steer clear of pointing out her terrible shoe choice, unforgiving black bra underneath the sheer, white tshirt and her sullen expression, teamed with her pulled back hair in the style of a school girl. But, in terms of the trousers (more like pyjamas), they have no shape, doing no justice to her skinny legs and on top of that, the colour is all wrong.
Unlike Kristen's trousers, Kate looks cool as usual in these rocker Balmain red trousers tucked into black riding boots.
Olivia Palermo rocking a lovely, soft, woolen plaid blazer.

Some celebs wearing some slightly questionable plaid red carpet outfits.
A nice way to add some plaid is by simply wrapping a plaid shirt around the waist, as Kylie Jenner demonstrates well here.
